FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Members of the Chester Lions Club attended the Annual Lions Day at the UMDNJ-Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, 90 Bergen Street , Newark , NJ .  Accolades were graciously accepted by the Chester Club for donating $20,000 towards the purchase of a machine that will aid in glaucoma surgery.

The extraordinary presentation by Dr. Marco A. Zarbin, who discussed the strides in research that have been made in age related macular degeneration, a devastating eye condition that affects a large percentage of the senior population, was informative and fascinating.

In addition to the presentation on macular degeneration, Dr. David Chu, Associate Professor of the Cornea and External Ocular Disease Division discussed the progress that has been made in the area of Scleritis, a disease of the external portion of the eye.  He indicated that the whole body must be treated to make inroads into combating the disease.

Along with the profoundly interesting presentation of how important the research is and what strides are being made, it was brought out that funding is sourly needed for the University to continue its mission.  In addition, space is needed to continue the clinical research as growth in the facility will promote growth in its output.

The extraordinary accomplishments the Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Science has made is a direct result of its exemplary staff that not only perform research but also trains residents in eye care.

It was an impressive presentation that gave the Chester Lions Club impetus to continue supporting the Institute.
